63: 1-8
Janet
Kuhn
This scripture passage is described as a psalm of
David in the wilderness of Judah. Have you ever been in “the wilderness of
Judah”? Have you ever been in a place or time when you needed refuge and were
seeking the presence of God? And in that moment when you felt utterly alone,
aimless, and spent, after a deep sigh, you find yourself speaking the words,
“Oh, God”?
I’ve been there, and it’s amazing to me that these
ancient words echo still. How many of us
begin our pleas similarly, with “Oh God, where are you? I long for you. I need
you.” These are the moments when I have
no choice but to surrender and relinquish control, because there’s just nothing
I can do to make “it” happen. No matter
how hard I try, no amount of planning, preparing, studying, analyzing, wishing
or worrying, can make “it” happen, and I hate that. Strangely though, and as crazy as it sounds,
when I can be open to it, these very moments can actually be very liberating. I
can finally stop the noise, the business, and instead, left finally in silence,
hear and remember and be comforted by what I know to be true.
“I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding
your power and glory… your steadfast love is better than life… my soul is
satisfied… you have been my help … your right hand upholds me.”
And then with renewed strength, and renewed hope, I
know in my core that no matter what, God will uphold me, God will never leave
me. I am never alone.
Prayer: “I
will bless you as long as I live; I will lift up my hands and call on your
name.” Amen.
Daily Challenge: In gratitude,
share a gift of yours with someone you know who might be in the “wilderness of
Judah”.
