Warner Lamar, 8th Grader
When I first reread the text after being asked to
write about this passage, I was reminded of past years seeing the children with
the palm fronds on Palm Sunday. This is one story of joy and good news the
likes of which we will not see again until Easter. At first glance it seems to
be little more than a fun story, a nice little break before the tragedy of Maundy
Thursday and Good Friday. But when you stop to think about the circumstances,
it becomes a story of love and courage.
Jesus knows the fate that awaits
him at the end of his journey. Jesus knows his betrayal, suffering, and death
wait just around the corner in Jerusalem, and Jesus being fully human is
experiencing the real human emotion of fear. Jesus knows what will happen to
him if he continues down this path, but he does not turn and run. Instead he
instructs his disciples to bring him a colt and rides calmly onward. Jesus is
able to face his fear with such courage because his love for all of humanity is
greater even than his fear. He knows that his sacrifice is needed so that we
might be saved from our sin.
We all have fears. It is part of
being human; but just because we are afraid does not mean it should keep us
from living how Jesus taught us to live. As an eighth grader at a school that is
attached to a high school, I have chosen not to pursue some service
opportunities. I have been afraid to be surrounded by people who had been doing
a particular project for years if I do not have my friends with me. Having my friends with me is a comfort. It is
hard to leave our comfort zone, but it is often necessary to become
uncomfortable and face our fears in order to love our neighbor.
Daily Message: Step
out of your comfort zone to help others.
Prayer: Dear God, give
us the courage to answer your call.
