Everybody Makes Mistakes

Saturday, March 16                                    Isaiah 43:16-21
John O'Dell

A few years ago during a lacrosse game, we were tied with the other team and looking to have an even record if we won, which would greatly bump up our chances for making the championship. There were only about three minutes left in the game when their attack men stormed down our side. Our defense executed perfectly and one of the attack men dropped the ball. I scooped up the ball and to my worst fear, there was nowhere to run and no one to throw the ball to. But then I saw it, my goalie was open! Quickly I tossed the ball to my goalie, thinking we had won the game, but then I saw it happening. I screamed our goalie’s name, but it did no good because by the time he heard my voice, the ball was in the net. I had scored, but on our own team.
Though we ended up losing by three points, I felt as if I had lost the game for my team. I carried the guilt for the rest of the season beating myself up and making me believe I was a terrible lacrosse player even though no one on the team or the coaches thought that.
As I have gotten older I have realized that failing others is not what we fear, but failing ourselves. In Isaiah it says, “Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old.” This is something that I have taken to heart, not only in lacrosse but in all my life. We should learn from our mistakes, but not bring ourselves or others down. We must forgive and forget.
It also says in Isaiah, “I am about to do a new thing.” So the next time you lock your keys in your car, forget your backpack, or score a goal on your own team, don’t beat up yourself or anyone else and try again and keep going for it, maybe even try something new. But most importantly, as Hannah Montana says, “everybody makes mistakes.”
